EGN runs a PvPGN server in Perth, which emulates the functions of the official Battle.Net servers, except, it is located in Australia, and not the USA or Europe, like the official Battle.Net servers.

About

The purpose of the game is to defend your Ancient and try to destroy the opponents Ancient. The ancients are located deep in both bases, which are located at the top right and bottom left corners of the map. There are over 70 heroes that differ greatly in play style. Each of these heroes have been carefully designed so they are both balanced and unique. The map is updated frequently, sometimes to add new heroes, fix bugs or to make a balance update. The strategies possible with DotA are pretty much endless, choosing the wrong item and hero combination can mean the difference between a win and a loss for your team. The gameplay in DotA Allstars can be classified as relatively fast because as the game progresses any small mistake you make can be fatal to the overall team.

Gamemodes

There are numerous game modes, which are set by the host (blue player or player1) at the beginning few seconds of the map loading. This is done by typing the gamemodes in any order preceeded by '-' in the chat

eg. -apemsc will set allpick, easy mode, and super creeps

A short list of some of the available game modes and their abbreviations and descriptions are below:

  • Allpick (ap) - In this mode, players can pick any hero from both the available sentinal and scourge team taverns that hasn't already been picked.
  • Allrandom (ar) - In this mode, players are randomly assigned a hero from all available heroes
  • RandomDraft (rd) - Players are forced to select from a random pool of two taverns worth of heroes from the total pool. Players select in alternating sequence of sentinal and scourge team players.
  • Easy Mode (em) - In this mode, towers are substantially weakened, with players receiving higher gold and experience bonuses every 8 seconds and when creeps or heroes are killed. Due to this, this mode is substantially easier for beginner players and offers a generally faster playing experience.
  • Supercreeps mode (sc) - A random high powered creep will spawn in one of the three lanes of each team every few minutes, they do not necessarily spawn in the same lane as each other or be of the same type, however in the early game stages, these super creeps are exceptionally strong and capable of destroying much of the enemy structures if backed up properly. The creep can be, in order of power: murloc, siege golem, hydra. It should be noted that unlike regular creeps, these supercreeps may prioritize human players over other creeps and structures in its attack.
  • Shuffle Players (sp) - This will randomly assign all players into random teams regardless of their position in the pre-game screen.
  • Reverse Mode (rv) - In this mode, players select the heroes the OTHER team will be using. Focus is on selecting poor synergies.
  • DeathMatch Mode (dm) - Upon death, players are forced to change heroes via whichever hero selection method is in play. New heroes will spawn with items previously held and at the same hero level as the old hero. Each team has a limit of 44 respawns total.
  • WTF Mode (wtf) - To enable this mode, '-wtf' must be entered by the host separately after any other game modes are set. In this mode, spells have the minimum possible cool down, and no mana cost. This also applies to items with cool downs such as Linkens Sphere, and Black King Bar. It is a purely for fun mode due to the lack of balance it has.

AI Version

Although in the typical map, only human players can exist, there exists a version of the map that is available from http://www.getdota.com that comes in an AI flavour. This is that computer players can be added that can effectively play the game. Although simple and unable to simulate a true player, they are seen as useful tools for a beginner whilst learning the game and prepares a beginner for the online experience better. The most common AI map, made by Cloud_Str is usually a few versions behind, however will be fine for learning basic game mechanics and grasping the idea behind the game.
